Screech Owl Sanctuary
The Screech Owl Sanctuary, near Indian Queens, is home to all the six
different species of British owls, as well as those from around the
world.
Many of the owls here are hand reared and so can be introduced to visitors
who can stroke their feathers and see them close up.
Other owls are kept here whilst they recover from injury and are then
released back into the wild.
The shop is full of souvenirs and gifts, all with an owl theme. From
ornaments, to t-shirts, from mugs to notebooks, there is something for
almost everyone.
Newquay Zoo
The zoo in Newquay is a popular place to visit, with a day-long programme
of talks from the friendly and informative keepers.
There is time to wander around the displays of monkeys and lemurs,
bats flying in the dark, sloths living in the tops of tropical trees
and the lions in the enclosure.
There are several Animal Encounter sessions when visitors can have
a closer look at some of the visitor-friendly inhabitants - perhaps
a python or even a rat!
The Dragon Maze is a chance to try out navigation skills - so far we
have never lost anyone inside!
The meerkats are very popular creatures. They post lookouts around
their colony, diving in and out of the holes where they live.
Blue Reef Aquarium
You do not have to like fish to appreciate the beauties
that are on display here.
There are opportunities to see them being fed - to see their life cycles is a
fascinating experience. Over 40 naturally-themed habitats take you on a fantastic journey
from Cornish waters to exotic seas. Come face to face with freshwater turtles,
watch pulsating jellyfish and meet amazing pufferfish!
At the Aquarium's heart is the giant ocean tank where an underwater tunnel offers incredible
views of giant wrasse, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish.
A full programme of entertaining talks and feeding displays take place throughout the day.
Porfell
This animal farm is a very popular choice amongst the guests;
here you will see wallabies, lemurs, porcupines and meerkats to
name just a few - along with Bert the Capybara.
Porfell is both a sanctuary and an animal farm, home to many exotic and domestic creatures.
Each visitor is valued as the revenue protects these animals and allows good
research to be undertaken to help the wild animals in their country of origin.
The farm allows for a very hands on experience and who can resist those fluffy rabbits?
Porfell is located close to Looe. Once you have finished exploring
the sanctuary and farm, you
are only a stone's throw away from many good shops and cafés.
